Did you know that physical therapists are required to complete continuing education for our license renewal every 2 years? At MTS, we strive to provide  physical therapy at its best,”  which means we are constantly on the lookout for ways to better ourselves. This week, eight of our PTs were able to attend the Hoag Orthopedic Institute Sports Medicine Conference.

In the morning we had the opportunity to learn about foot/ankle injuries from Dr. Brandon Haghverdian, followed by breakout sessions including opportunities for hands-on training in labs discussing topics of concussion and vestibular rehab, foot/ankle and spine manual therapy, and joint reductions. Before lunch, Betsy Kovacs, NP, shared information about opioid use, and Della Lisi Kerr passionately trained us in opioid overdose reversal using Naloxone.

At lunch, we connected with other PTs and athletic trainers in the area, broadening our network of referrals and debriefing our morning sessions.

In our afternoon session, we heard from Dr. Nick Jain about cervical spine injuries in athletes, participated in case study discussions about knee ligaments, unique shoulder differential diagnosis, and exercise associated collapse. We reconvened for Dr. Mark Hambly’s lecture on conservative treatment of the spine.

Finally, we had an enlightening hour of Q&A with a panel of experienced MDs, PTs, and ATs in the area that touched on current topics in the field and the trajectory of medicine with modern advances.

These types of events allow us access to other healthcare professionals in a collaborative setting, sharing different perspectives of the rehabilitation process. This breaks down perceived barriers and facilitates better results for our patients – we’re better together! We walked away from the day equipped with new tools in our toolbox, and look forward to implementing them in our patients’ programs.
